MARIETTA MIDDLE SCHOOL
Since 2015, the Marietta Daisies Garden Club has proudly partnered with the special needs and adaptive curriculum classes at Marietta Middle School, providing students with meaningful opportunities to learn, explore, and grow through hands-on gardening experiences.
The partnership began with educator Susan Donlin, who invited the club to work alongside students in an existing school garden. Together, Mrs. Donlin and Marietta Daisies members envisioned transforming the space into an engaging outdoor learning environment. Daiaies member Tracie Guckian developed the original garden plan, laying the foundation for what would become the Marietta Middle School Sensory Garden.
In 2022, the Marietta Daisies brought that vision to life by installing the sensory garden, creating an outdoor classroom designed to stimulate the senses while encouraging exploration, discovery, and environmental stewardship.
One of the Marietta Daisies' beloved community projects, the sensory garden continues to thrive through the dedication of our members.
This new year, 2026-2027 Co-Chairs, Martha Lee Sanders and Maria Harbin will lead both indoor and outdoor educational activities that complement classroom learning while coordinating year-round maintenance of the garden. During the summer months, they organize volunteer watering schedules and oversee the harvest of fresh vegetables, which are donated to the Presbyterian Church Food Bank to benefit families in our community.
During the summer of 2026, Marietta Daisies members contributed approximately 50 volunteer hours to restoring and enhancing the garden after four years of enthusiastic student use. Volunteers repaired the play bridge and garden gate, removed hazardous tree stumps, refreshed garden beds, repainted the Adirondack chair and educational butterfly life cycle picnic table, and transformed three additional picnic tables into colorful interactive Tic-Tac-Toe game tables complete with playing pieces.
Through the dedication of our members and community partners, the Marietta Middle School Sensory Garden continues to flourish as a vibrant outdoor classroom where students cultivate vegetables, discover the wonders of nature, develop confidence through hands-on learning, and experience the joy and therapeutic benefits of gardening.
