February 17 marks the 125th anniversary of the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), founded in 1897 as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Pheobe Apperson Hearst, in addition to the work of Selena Slone Butler (who formed the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers). Known as “Founder’s Day,” the educational legacy of these women is celebrated. Here in Marietta, GA, the birthplace of Alice McLellan Birney, we honor our native founder with a beautiful and historic national memorial — The Birney Memorial Rose Garden.
