Pansy, Pumpkins, and Catapults, Oh My!!!
October Fun, STEM Learning, and Fall Creativity at Marietta Middle School!

The Marietta Daisies brought a little fall fun,
hands-on learning, and colorful creativity to
Marietta Middle School this October 2026!
Leigh Nielsen led the educational STEM activity, introducing students to the fascinating science behind catapults. These classic hands-on tools offer a fun way to explore the principles of force, motion, energy, and engineering design.

Students learned how stored energy is released to create motion, how Newton’s Laws of Motion influence the launch, and how angles and gravity affect the distance and trajectory of flying objects.
Putting their newfound knowledge into action, students assembled their own handheld catapults and enthusiastically tested their creations by launching spiders, eyeballs, and mini pumpkins through the air!
The activity brought science to life with excitement.

Martha Lee Sanders led the pumpkin painting activity, where students transformed small pumpkins into colorful works of art using a creative paint-pouring technique. Swirls of vibrant colors flowed over each pumpkin, producing unique and imaginative fall masterpieces!

The Daisies also helped students plant beautiful pansies purchased through the Pansy Palooza fundraiser, benefiting the Marietta Educational Garden
Center through the Marietta Council of Garden Clubs. Students enjoyed getting their hands in the soil while learning about planting and caring for seasonal flowers.
A special thank-you to Maria Harbin, Elizabeth Buford, Katryn Taylor, Jane Cooley, and Cathy Brooks, who generously assisted with catapult assembly, pansy planting, garden watering, and pumpkin painting. Their helping hands and enthusiasm made the day even more enjoyable!
It was a wonderful day combining science, art, gardening, and community spirit.
The Marietta Daisies treasure these opportunities to work with Marietta Middle School students, to spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and nurture a lifelong appreciation for gardening and the natural world.
