Ripe Melon Tips from Vine to Market
We don't always get a chance to grow or pick from a farm so the grocery or farmers market is where we choose our melons. It is be can daunting to choose the perfect melon. I like to do the thumping test.
Don't worry if it doesn't work the first time you will get better with practice.
From your Mom
First I inhale its sweetness, then place it close to my ear and pat the melon with my fingers using a rapping (not a slap).
If the sound is low-pitched, hollow, and deep like a drum, it is ready!
...this technique works with all melons.
From the Farm.
Did you know once a watermelon are detached from the vine, they won’t continue to ripen.
That said if you have a green thumb or field trip to a pick your own farm.
You only get one chance to do this right!
Here are other subtle cues to look out for:
The green color becomes dull.
On a striped melons, the color between the stripes gets darker.
The rind will get hard.
The blossom end will soften.
They will stop getting larger.
The ground spot will turn from white to yellow.
