Bite-Sized Beds

Thought I would pass along in case there is a few of you that do not subscribe to Autumn Hill.

Spring Weekends are made for projects, and I wanted to start a little series I’m calling Bite-Sized Beds. A little design that you can add to your existing gardens or yard with the intention of keeping it budget friendly, flexible and guaranteed to be done start to finish between Saturday morning and Sunday night!

We’re kicking off strong with a Berry Beautiful design. If you’ve read our edible gardening e-news that I write, you know that my biggest passion helping people create gardens that are both delicious and beautiful.

Blueberries fit this bill to a tee, as the EASIEST fruit you can grow, lovely early spring blooms, and leaves that stay a deep red in the autumn bringing you seasons of beauty and a summer full of snacking. This design also incorporates full sun, blooming perennials and a low growing ground cover to add interest, invite pollinators for more berry production, and highlight the blueberries ornamental qualities. 

Things to keep in mind when implementing this design. You need a minimum of two different varieties of traditional blueberries for cross pollination. Three is better aesthetically and a third variety will strengthen your cross pollination and increase your berry harvest. A classic trio is Climax, Tifblue and Premier.

Shopping list: 

           3 Blueberries: 1 Gallon or 3 Gallon

           3 12-18 inch Tall Flowering Full- Sun Perennials.

           2 8-12 inch Tall Flowering Full-Sun Perennials in a complementary or contrasting color

           3 Full Sun Ground Covers: 4 inch

           1 Bag of CLM

           1 Bag of Mulch or Bale of Pinestraw 

           A sweet treat to reward yourself at the end of a good day of playing in the dirt.
